A snaffle bit is a jointed western mouthpiece without shanks, which is only available as a D-ring snaffle or O-ring snaffle. Used properly the snaffle applies pressure to the corners of the mouth and the jaws of the horse.

Bits made of sweet iron accumulate rust. Due to the sweet taste, they are better accepted by the horse.
